The former Chelsea winger was just 32 years old when he announced his retirement from football over a month ago, much to the surprise of many.
His former teammate, John Mikel Obi has however, now suggested the reason the Belgian turned down the Saudi offers was because he didn’t like the league, even if he could have earned up to £1m a week.
“Eden Hazard had offers to go to Saudi Arabia, but he said, ‘I have a lot of money right now, I don’t need the money’,” Mikel said on the FIVE YouTube channel.
“‘They will give me 1M a week, then what? I don’t spend that much money. I have enough money to live with my family’.”
In the retirement note which Hazard posted on social media, he did say he was no longer enjoying playing the sport, hence the decision to hang up his boots, so perhaps that was also the reason he didn’t find the offers from the Saudi Arabian Pro League, and clubs in the MLS attractive enough.
